The container is made from specially formulated polyolefin (PL 325). The polyolefin is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene.
The objective of regional hypothermia is to reduce cellular metabolic activity so that body tissues can tolerate a period of total or relative ischemia thereby inhibiting the formation and buildup of destructive autolytic enzymes and anaerobic by-products usually produced and accumulated in ischemic tissues.
The flexible plastic slush container is fabricated from a specially formulated polyvinyl chloride (PL 146 Plastic). The amount of water that can permeate from inside the container into the overwrap is insufficient to affect the solution significantly.
0.9% Sodium Chloride Irrigation, USP is useful as an irrigating fluid for body joints because the solution is isotonic, and provides a transparent fluid medium with optical properties suitable for good visualization of the interior joint surface during endoscopic examination.
However, the safety of the plastic has been confirmed in tests in animals according to USP biological tests for plastic containers as well as by tissue culture toxicity studies.
Sterile Water for Injection, USP is indicated in the aseptic preparation of parenteral admixtures.
Sterile Water for Injection, USP is used for fluid replacement only after suitable admixing to approximate isotonicity.
The amount of water that can permeate from inside the container into the overwrap is insufficient to affect the solution significantly. Solutions in contact with the plastic container may leach out certain chemical components from the plastic in very small amounts; however, biological testing was supportive of the safety of the plastic container materials.
